Unbound Edition Press today announced it will publish Charles Douthat’s second collection of poems, Again. The title is scheduled for publication in April 2025.
A retired litigator and accomplished visual artist, Douthat began writing poems during a mid-life illness. His first book, Blue for Oceans, was awarded the 2011 PEN New England Award. Individual poems have been published in Kenyon Review, Los Angeles Review, Revel, and Threepenny Review, and have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac.
“These are beautiful, deft, honest, utterly adult poems,” said Baron Wormser of Douthat’s first book. J.D. McClatchy wrote: “Blue for Oceans is a haunted and wise book.”
Douthat’s new collection centers around elegies for the poet’s parents and sister, conjuring the lost world of his California family and childhood with profound sympathy, through a telling language of his own. Peter Campion, executive editor at Unbound Edition Press, acquired the title for the house, and is editing the work. He notes: “I’m astonished by Charles’ gift for writing about loss. He writes without despair or mere nostalgia but with tremendous poignancy. There’s such vividness throughout this collection, and such heart.”
Patrick Davis, publisher and editor in chief at Unbound Edition Press, said, “We focus on publishing literary dissent from fearless writers. That takes many forms, and Again assuredly stands among them. Charles dissents from hopelessness with a fearless vulnerability, an honesty that only a lifetime of deep reflection and difficult acceptance can achieve. We are profoundly honored to publish his work.”
