Why does it matter if your new platter really came from Pottery Barn? Why does it matter if your new patio set really came from Crate & Barrel? Is it all right if you bought the same pieces at Target for a lot less?

When I shop, I look to Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel for decorating inspiration, and usually end up only purchasing a few key items from them. My secret is I find cheaper versions of the styles I like at more affordable stores.

Recently, my mom and I went to Pottery Barn for a free class all about outdoor entertaining. There were tables set up perfectly, ranging from elegant dinner party to clam bake. Now, my mom and I are probably not really going to throw either of those types of parties, but we did pick up a few great decorating tips. After the class, we browsed around the store and saw a few things we liked, but nothing screamed out different…or maybe I should say nothing screamed, “You can’t buy this anywhere else but right here at Pottery Barn!” So, we kindly thanked our teacher and went out to lunch.

The next week, I was shopping at Target picking up some essentials, when I noticed their outdoor section. In Target’s outdoor living section, there was a whole aisle that could have been in Pottery Barn. I saw similar, if not the exact same, iced tea pitchers, platters, place mats and lanterns. I was tempted to buy it all, but I only splurged on a pitcher.

So, why shouldn’t Target sell what is hot at the moment? I love the affordable upscale look.
