Absolut Global Branding Blunder PDF E-mail

Perhaps I’m letting my nationalism get the best of me, but Absolut’s “Reconquista” ad is a little insulting:

Teran/TBWA in Mexico City was likely hoping to stir up a little controversy – and I’m sure it will work.  But in tailoring specifically to a Mexican audience, they forgot that global brands are just that – global.  Brands can’t appeal to one population in a way that alienates another important market and hope not to get caught.  And as an email to one blogger puts it, what’s next, this?

Of course, few people outside of China would get upset if a similar execution was done using Tibet and China as the theme.  And one might say we nicked Mexico’s land Manifest Destiny style in the first place anyway, so perhaps I’m getting worked up over nothing.  What do you think?

So what happens in an Absolut World? Are all the "wrongs" made right? I don't get it. I understand they're being controversial, and I'm fine with that, but make sense, man. This idea would have been much clearer as part of the original "Absolute BLANK" ad campaign. Absolute Reparation.

I agree with the author's sentiments about this not being a wise move, considering the American market is certain to be more lucrative for Absolut. This could have been an interesting In Vito Veritas campaign for a Mexican wine.
Who the hell is Vito?
