I never really liked Jared, Subway’s original lovable oaf with the ultimate customer testimonial. But the message was clear: eat Subway and lose weight (provided you don’t like mayonnaise or anything else at Subway that tastes good). But Subway’s brand endorsement from the imaginary portly doofus, Peter Griffin from “Family Guy,” doesn’t make sense to me.
I can understand the desire to link your brand to a relevant pop culture icon. But not when it’s a dimwitted, culturally insensitive boob whose chin, mouth and nose are intentionally drawn to look like a…well, see for yourself:
(And if you’re not convinced, see “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane’s other popular character, “American Dad.” Or perhaps I just have a dirty mind.)
I get it, Subway. The massive Feast sandwich can even satisfy chin-balls fatty Peter Griffin. You’re reminding us that you have fun, calorie-laden food, and not just the lettuce and bread sandwiches that trimmed down good ol’ Jared’s posterior.
Maybe it’s just me, but despite my admiration for the “Family Guy,” this campaign seems like a bad move. Is it off brand? Or is does it make you crave a “fresh” Subway sandwich?
If it’s the latter, perhaps someday soon you can wash it all down with a cold Pawtucket Patriot Ale. Gross.
