While the talk this time of year usually focuses on the amount of money Americans are spending, many people also see the holidays as a time of giving. Every December, we are asked to donate gifts, adopt a less fortunate family, volunteer our time and pour our pennies into the Salvation Army's kettles.

However, a new survey indicates that giving will be down this year, due somewhat to rising prices of gas, oil and housing.  Instead of outright giving, many Americans plan to purchase gifts that directly support a charity, or buy from retailers that are tied to a cause.
