The Pink Moon Impact PDF E-mail

I grew up thinking that commercials did not have sound.  As soon as a commercial came on, my parents muted the TV faster than you could say "annoying."  But there is one commercial that made it through the muting and I still enjoy watching it over and over again: Volkswagen’s Cabriolet commercial set to Nick Drake’s "Pink Moon."

To this day I still want a 1999 Cabriolet.  I have no doubt that one day I will own my 1999 Cabriolet and listen to Pink Moon while driving with my friends at night under a full moon.  That commercial had such an impact on me, and a lasting impact at that, which is not something many brands can pull off.

It is scary yet exciting to think how commercials can have such an effect on you.  For me, it has everything to do with the music in the commercial.  The new Target commercials, love them.  I actually stay in front of the TV to watch the end of them.  On the other hand as soon as this commercial appears, the TV goes off.  It is a great way to get me to turn off the TV and start being productive.  I will never use Vonage just because their commercials hurt my brain.

Here is a great question brands should be asking themselves before producing a commercial, "Do we really understand our consumer in relation to music? Not just their lifestyle, but what makes a heart beat to the music?"  Music has a way of making people feel connected, allowing you to escape and believe that someone else understands what you are feeling.

Is music the secret weapon to producing the perfect commercial?  Anyone else have a commercial that made an impact on them?

Music is what it is all about. Or humor (but smart humor). I found myself singing the Target song in the shower the other day. I don't know whether that says the ad is great or I need a life. Perhaps both.

I still want a Cabriolet, too. A Cabriolet and a Karmann Ghia. Oh! And a Scirroco, too.

I love Volkswagens, if you can't tell. That "Pink Moon" commercial was especially whimsical and lovely. Now I'm thinking of the other great VW commercials that choose the right music to represent the brand.

This Da Da Da commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_s5-R_JE4c
And this one. No, thank YOU very much-o! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBdLJ7Pox9Y

Then, their ads got really stupid. Annoying.

Welcome back, Margarita!

What a great Cabriolet commercial! The music in commercials usually is so annoying that a good song automatically catches my ear - and my eyes. I personally love the song in the Saturn commercials, which Jennifer covered in a previous post.
Nick Drake of FURY!

VW also introduced me to Nick Drake, and the dreamy, reflective tune "Pink Moon." I went out and bought a lot of Nick Drake's work thanks to that commercial. VW would probably prefer you stop the association somewhere before his suicide, I imagine.

BUT: VW has always been quite forward thinking in their music selection. For a time, they listed all of the bands on their website (they may still do this, I'm too link-lazy to check this out).

I'm always impressed when a company will truly go after the music they suspect their audience may connect with. VW has been smart to make music so central to their commercials... it takes the pressure off the copywriters, to be sure. Ask the question, "How do I feel driving a Cabriolet at night with my friends?"... and if you can answer that question with a soundtrack rather than a cheezy voice over? Well done.

Pink uh pink uh pink uh pink... uh pink moon.

Thanks for the comment in my blog. A friend gave me a Nick Drake's record album long time ago - your post reminded me of that :)

Nick Drake is a wonderful songwriter. Too bad he's so underrated. I love "The Day is Done."
