Americans Taking Fewer Vacation Days PDF E-mail

Want to get away? ” Well, according to a recent Associated Press article, more Americans are saying, “No thanks.”  The article cites a recent study by Orbitz that found that one-third of respondents took five days or less of vacation in the past year.  The reasoning behind not taking more vacation days ranged from having too few vacation days, to feeling discouraged by the boss to take vacation, to not having the money to travel.  And, even when people do choose to take a vacation, one in three said that they stay connected to the office in some capacity.

Is it a wonder that antidepressants are the most prescribed drug in the country? (NOTE: I know this is not a direct correlation and I’m not trying to go all Tom Cruise on you – just pondering the question.)

I understand that everyone has busy careers, and there may be certain issues at work that could not be handled by anyone else in your absence.  But we are a tired country.  We need to give ourselves breaks from our hectic schedules.  In the end, taking breaks actually increases productivity at work – ya hear that?  It makes you better at your job!  So go look at your calendar and block out a few days to get away and reconnect with yourself and your family.

When I realized I have 268 hours of PTO, I decided to take your advice. Mile High City, here I come.
AP sources Orbitz?

A travel company contributes data to an article which supports the benefit of longer vacations. Huh.

Nice placement, Orbitz.

Whether or not the information is sponsored by Orbitz (which was a clever point to make, Eric), the opinions voiced are very disconcerting.

Let an employee never fear his company; may the company fear its employee!

(Except for Wal-Mart. I always need my low prices, and a strike or employment shortage would really get in my way.)
