The cover article of Inc. Magazine’s latest issue asks companies how they are utilizing their intangible assets: brands, customer information, business models, employee expertise, to name a few. While this subject can be a quantifiable nightmare (especially for smaller companies…and auditors), it is imperative for companies of all sizes to address.

 

Almost five years ago, I was in a car accident that I’m still trying to figure out how I survived. My car was totaled beyond recognition, and the door I remember opening to get out of the car was jammed so badly that it could not be opened by anyone after I’d been taken from the scene. I spent a few hours in the hospital, and after all the blood had been cleaned up, I came out with only 7 stitches, a few scratches, no skin on my chin and a swollen face. The people who saw the accident couldn’t believe it. The doctor said that he believed the only reason I managed to survive the crash was because I was wearing my seat belt.

 

I am a television junkie. I consume hours of news broadcasts, reality shows, comedies, dramas, Elmo and The Wiggles each week. However, I am proud to acknowledge that my TV addiction does not interfere with my daily life … thanks to TiVo.

While some may argue that UFC is taking steps to be mentioned in the same breath with NASCAR, MLB, the NHL and the NBA, America’s fascination with football will keep the NFL on top of the sports entertainment world for the foreseeable future.

 

Alec Baldwin has said his apologies but I think it’s safe to say he won’t be nominated for the PTA anytime soon. Baldwin’s words, obviously brought on by complete exasperation and frustration over an ongoing custody battle, were inexcusable and disgusting, but they were also intended to be part of a private conversation (or in this case, voicemail) with his daughter. Surprise! Now even a private voicemail can be made public. And who among us hasn’t said something horrible in the heat of the moment that we wish we could take back? I am not making excuses for Baldwin (I do agree he needs some major anger management counseling), but it is just ridiculous and absurd that a private voicemail can become national news in a matter of minutes. I guess it is our fault for paying attention and making it news.
